Coffee BBQ Sauce

This barbecue sauce is rich and well balanced, not too sweet, with the bitterness of coffee and the zing of jalapeño melding into a thick and tangy sauce that has real complexity and sass! Slather your grilled chicken generously just before serving.

Coffee BBQ Sauce (makes 1½ to 2 quarts - recipe can be halved)

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup Butter
  • 2 cups Onion, minced
  • 6 cloves Garlic, chopped
  • 1 Jalapeno, seeded and finely chopped
  • 2 cup strong black Coffee
  • 2 cups Ketchup
  • 1 cup Cider Vinegar
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar
  • 2 tbsp Dry Mustard
  • ¼ cup Cumin
  • ¼ cup Chili Powder
  • 1 ½ cup Honey
  • 1 ½ tbsp Balsamic Reduction Glaze
  • ½ tsp Sriracha
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Preparation

In a saucepan, melt butter and sauté onions, garlic and jalapenos until soft. Add remaining ingredients. Simmer sauce over medium heat until thickened and flavors come together, about 20 minutes.  Brush generously over grilled chicken just before serving. Unused BBQ sauce can be kept in a sealed jar and refrigerated for 2-3 weeks.
